Synopsis
We have been experiencing load shedding in South Africa for some time now, and the question is, should we go back to the use of lanterns for lighting? Solar energy is by far the most abundant form of renewable energy in South Africa and has the potential to partially replace fossil fuels. In recent years, South Africa has witnessed a substantial increase in the installation of small and large scale solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in response to the government's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). More companies and individuals want to install solar panels either off-grid or grid-tied. The PV modules have a high probability of being able to perform adequately for 30 years if properly designed and installed. PV installation shall comply with the following standards: SAN10142-1:2021 Section 7.12; SANS 60364-7-712:2018 ed 2.
