Synopsis
One of the main objectives of earthing electrical systems is to establish a common reference potential for the power supply system, building structure, plant steelwork, electrical conduits, cable ladders & trays and the instrumentation system.
The importance of human life and the advances in electrical and electronic technology, and its increased sensitivity and scope for increased consequential losses, together with the introduction of SAN 10199, SANS 62305, SANS1063, SANS 10200, SANS 10292, SANS61024 etc., has further lifted the requirements for a professional approach to the provision of Earthing and lightning protection. Moreover, in electrical systems, fault currents can be caused by lightning or electrical faults and low impedance earth must be present for the safe dissipation of the fault current. Therefore, the purpose of a lightning protection system and effective earthing is to control the passage of a discharge in such a manner that prevents personal injury or property damage. Installations, where lightning protection is highly desirable, are high rise buildings, power stations, substations, factories, mining areas, television stations, radio stations, telecommunications stations etc.
It is important, therefore, that an effective earthing system (lightning protection earthing and electrical earthing systems) be properly designed and installed specifically to the unique requirement of the structures to be protected.
This three-day course/workshop, which is based on appropriate SANS, IEEE & IEC standards has been prepared to enhance understanding of earthing, bonding and lightning protection of electrical equipment and building structures including solar PV system. It is aimed at equipping learners with in-depth knowledge of purposes and various methods of electrical system earthing, bonding and lightning protection system design, implementation, maintenance and testing.
